Young Neocaridina need usable food in places they can reach. Established grazing surfaces and appropriate fine food can contribute together. A tablet surrounded by adults or powder scattered everywhere does not prove juveniles are eating. Amano larvae and other species with a larval phase require a separate rearing approach.

Arrange food before young appear

  • Preserve accessible colonised surfaces and refuge structure. Assess how major cleaning or rescaping affects those places.
  • Choose food intended for the life stage. “Powder” describes its form, not nutritional completeness.
  • Distribute a measured total addition where juveniles have access. Check that it is not swept away immediately or eaten exclusively by other animals.
  • Follow product instructions and account for all other additions. More feeding locations do not automatically require more total food.

A laboratory experiment found that early food restriction in Neocaridina can affect later outcomes. Juveniles remaining alive or molting therefore do not establish adequate nutrition. We derive no safe fasting duration from that experiment.

Powder also needs monitoring

Record product, amount and time. A scoop belongs to its specific product; do not casually estimate a much smaller tank’s dose. Observe distribution and food loading. Dissolved or out-of-sight material is not the same as consumed material. Investigate cloudiness or deterioration instead of repeatedly adding more.

Fewer young are visible: what next?

A count in a densely planted aquarium is incomplete. Record observations under comparable conditions, such as the same illuminated feeding area, and look for several kinds of evidence. Act immediately if animals deteriorate rather than waiting for a scheduled review week.

  • Food: can young access it, and does provision account for a growing colony?
  • Filter: check openings and collect and inspect maintenance water. A prefilter sponge cannot guarantee protection for every tiny animal.
  • Tankmates: assess predation and competition; refuge plants do not automatically make fish safe.
  • Water and health: check relevant readings and recent changes. For deaths, follow the problem route.

Extra food cannot fix an open filter intake, predation or unsuitable water. Food deprivation is likewise not a safe default response to an unclear cause.

Sources and scope

The feeding experiment concerns early Neocaridina davidi under laboratory conditions. We do not translate its outcomes into safe fasting days, food mass or guaranteed survival. The powder source describes a product; our checks connect food access, housing and water quality.
