Prefilter sponges for shrimplets: fit and flow

Choose intake protection appropriate for both the filter and the smallest animals. Check connections, openings and flow after installation. Foam reduces open intake space but offers no guarantee: Aquarium Co-Op notes that very small animals can still pass through under some suction conditions.
Assess the entire route
- Which openings are accessible, including any skimmer or second intake?
- Does protection fit all around, including bends and attachments? An oversized centre hole can leave a route beside the pipe.
- Will the material stay in place during use and maintenance? Use a fixing appropriate for the device and aquarium.
- Can the filter operate with this resistance according to its instructions? Finer material can clog sooner; more pump power is not an automatic solution.
Record the outlet’s appearance after installation. Compare during daily observation and after maintenance. Reduced output warrants checking foam, hoses, pump or air supply. For fan shrimp, reduced current can also alter food delivery.
Service and refit
Follow the filter’s shutdown and dismantling instructions. Carefully lift the sponge into a vessel containing aquarium water and check for small animals before discarding dirty water. Clean while preserving useful filtration; avoid soap. Refit protection completely and check restart.
A fixed weekly cleaning day cannot replace blockage checks. Tears, poor fit or persistently restricted flow require repair or replacement. After work, assess physical protection and biological function; clean-looking foam does not demonstrate ammonia processing. Use the maintenance route for that assessment.
