Feeding fan shrimp: food must reach the fans

A fan shrimp such as Atyopsis moluccensis captures fine food particles from water with its fans. A bottom tablet and a powerful pump therefore do not constitute a feeding plan: suitable particles must pass a usable perch and be taken up.

Check the food route

  • Provide a stable, accessible perch in suitable flow without exposing the animal to an unprotected intake. More pump power is not automatically better.
  • Choose appropriate fine food and set a measurable total addition using product instructions as starting information.
  • Observe the route from feeding point to animal: do particles reach the fans, settle earlier or enter the filter immediately?
  • If needed, offer a controlled amount upstream. Do not blast the animal directly or routinely switch off essential flow.
  • Repeatedly follow uptake and condition alongside water and waste loading. A cloudy food plume is not the objective.

Bottom scraping is a reason to investigate

If an animal frequently moves over or scrapes the bottom, check food transport, perch, disturbance and water. That behaviour alone does not prove starvation. Stationary filtering likewise does not establish nutrient intake. Persistently poor uptake or deterioration warrants species-specific help.

Do not dirty the aquarium to “feed” the water column. Do not keep adding powder when delivery fails: missing food transport and increased loading remain separate problems. For acute signs use the problem route. Larvae are outside this adult feeding approach.

Sources and scope

The feeding source specifically describes Atyopsis moluccensis. These steps are an editorial check of food transport, not a measured flow specification, diagnosis or validated ration. Assess the actual species separately.
