Making shrimp food: what must you be able to assess?

Preparing an addition yourself is possible, but an attractive mixture is not automatically complete shrimp food. For occasional plant supplements, one suitable, accountable ingredient is easier to assess than a mixture of powders and supplements. Do not let an unsupported homemade recipe replace the whole feeding plan.
Assess a recipe before using it
- Purpose: is it a supplement, or does it claim to be complete? The latter needs information about composition, uptake and nutritional requirements, not just a list of healthy-sounding ingredients.
- Origins: are all ingredients identifiable and suitable? Do not copy a seasoning mix, human supplement or unidentified plant powder merely because an online recipe includes it.
- Evidence: which shrimp species and life stage were tested, with what comparison and outcomes? A calculation for farmed food prawns does not validate a dwarf-shrimp diet.
- Preparation and storage: what controls moisture, deterioration and shelf life? Home drying or freezing does not demonstrate that unknown risks are absent.
For a simple first addition, use the vegetable approach. Do not add calcium powder, vitamins or protein concentrate by intuition. A high protein percentage does not automatically improve or worsen a recipe; the whole formulation and use matter.
Keep an informative recipe record
Record ingredients and suppliers, quantities, preparation date, processing and storage method. Then record the amount offered, intake and leftovers. Avoid changing the recipe, water and stocking simultaneously if you want to assess an effect. Do not use the mixture if spoilage is in doubt.
We specify neither a months-long shelf life nor a complete-food recipe without evidence. A labelled shrimp food provides more accountable composition information; portion, storage and food access still matter.

- LICG: Zoetwatergarnaal
General nutrition and feed-storage sources identify considerations, not a validated Neocaridina or bee-shrimp recipe. We have performed no feeding trial. The record below is a practical way to keep uncertainties visible.
