Testing tap water for shrimp is the cheapest way to avoid beginner losses. Tap water can be excellent for Neocaridina, but it can also be too soft, too hard, inconsistent, chlorinated or affected by copper. Clear water does not prove shrimp safety. Testing does.

Why drinking water is not automatically shrimp water

CDC explains that utilities add chlorine or chloramine to tap water to kill germs and may switch between them. CDC also warns not to keep fish and other aquatic animals in water containing chlorine or chloramine, and notes that chloramine is not removed by simply letting water sit. EPA describes chloramines as disinfectants that last longer in pipes. For aquariums, that means a conditioner that treats chloramine matters.

Neocaridina ranges

The Shrimp Farm describes Neocaridina as adaptable and gives ideal values of GH 9-11, KH 4-6 and pH 7.0-7.6. Aquarium Co-Op gives cherry shrimp pH 6.5-8.5, GH at least 6 dGH and KH at least 2 dKH in the context of molting and minerals. LICG gives many freshwater shrimp a general pH range of 6-8 and medium hard water.

Do not chase exact numbers with pH chemicals. Stable water close to the breeder's values is safer than a perfect-looking pH that changes every week.

GH, KH and TDS

GH reflects minerals such as calcium and magnesium. KH reflects carbonate buffering and helps stabilize pH. TDS measures all dissolved solids together but does not tell you what they are. Use TDS as a trend tool next to GH and KH, not as a replacement.
