Shrimp-safe rocks and wood are materials that do not sabotage your water plan. A rock is not safe because it looks natural or because a store sells it for aquariums. It is safe when it matches the shrimp species, substrate, water source and stable values you want to maintain.

For a simple Neocaridina tank with suitable tap water, aquarium-safe wood, cholla wood, spiderwood, bogwood and usually lava rock or other inert-tested stones are the calmest choices. For Bee and Taiwan Bee Caridina on active soil, RO water and low KH, you need stricter rules. Limestone, coral, shells, cuttlebone, Seiryu-style stone and Ryuoh Stone can raise KH, GH and pH and work against the whole system.

When unsure, use wood and inert-tested stones. Test every rock or wood type outside the aquarium in a bucket with your own water. Measure pH, GH, KH and, if possible, TDS on day 0 and again after 7 to 14 days. If KH, GH or pH rises clearly, the material is not neutral. That can sometimes fit Neocaridina, but it is usually unwanted in soft-water Caridina setups.

Why hardscape matters for shrimp

Shrimp live on hardscape. They graze biofilm, hide after molting, use cracks as baby shelter and feed on surfaces all day. LICG recommends enough hiding places with moss, bogwood, stones and fine-leaved plants. Aquarium Co-Op also emphasizes plants, shelter and biofilm in cherry shrimp tanks, especially after molting when the new shell is still soft.

Hardscape therefore has two jobs. It must provide shelter and grazing surface, and it must not create water-chemistry or pollution problems. In small shrimp tanks, that matters even more because a small water volume reacts faster to leaching rock, rotting wood or trapped waste.

The four safety checks

  1. Does it fit your water values? A KH-raising material can be helpful in one setup and harmful in another.
  2. Is it clean and untreated? Avoid paint, oil, glue, metal, pesticides and unknown origin.
  3. Is it physically safe? Avoid unstable stacks, sharp cutting edges and deep food traps.
  4. Is the tank mature enough? Hardscape becomes more useful once biofilm and stable bacteria grow on it.

Rocks: inert, carbonate or unknown

The word safe is too broad for rocks. For Neocaridina in moderately hard tap water, a small KH or GH rise may be acceptable. For Caridina on active soil, the same rock can ruin the low-KH plan.

SRAC explains alkalinity as water's ability to buffer acid, with carbonates and bicarbonates as key components. It also explains that water moving through limestone can gain carbonate-bicarbonate alkalinity and hardness. ADA describes Ryuoh Stone as metamorphosed limestone that releases calcium carbonate in CO2-rich water, raising pH, total hardness and KH. That is why carbonate hardscape matters in shrimp tanks.

Lava rock

Lava rock is popular because it is porous, light and useful for moss, epiphytes and biofilm. In many shrimp tanks, aquarium-grade lava rock is a reasonable beginner choice if a bucket test shows stable values. Rinse dust away and check for sharp points. Shrimp graze porous surfaces, but food and debris can also lodge inside them, so do not build a dead-flow wall of lava rock.

Still test it. Products and batches differ, and the same trade name does not guarantee identical behavior.

Seiryu, Ryuoh, limestone, coral and shells

Seiryu-style stone and Ryuoh Stone are loved for sharp aquascapes, but this type of rock often contains carbonate. ADA specifically describes Ryuoh Stone as limestone that releases calcium carbonate and can raise pH, hardness and KH. In a shrimp tank, that means testing before use.

For Neocaridina, that rise may fit if final pH, GH, KH and TDS remain stable and match the shrimp's previous water. For Bee, Crystal Red, Taiwan Bee, Pinto and Blue Bolt on active soil, it is usually the wrong combination. The soil is trying to keep KH low while the rock adds carbonate.

Limestone, crushed coral, shells and cuttlebone follow the same logic. They can be useful when you intentionally want more alkalinity or minerals, but they are not neutral decoration.

Other stones and the bucket test

Some basalt, quartz, granite, slate or dragon stone can be fine when clean, inert and aquarium-safe. Store names are not always mineralogically precise, so test the actual piece you bought. Outdoor river stones are riskier because they may carry lime, oil, metals, pesticide or other pollution.

  1. Brush and rinse the stone with clean water. Do not use soap or cleaning products.
  2. Fill two buckets with the same water: one control bucket and one test bucket with the stone.
  3. Measure pH, GH, KH and TDS at the start.
  4. Leave both buckets for 7 to 14 days.
  5. Measure again and compare test water with the control water.
  6. Test one material at a time.

A vinegar fizz test can reveal obvious carbonate, but it is not enough as the only check. Slow leaching is easier to see by measuring pH, GH, KH and TDS over time. Do not boil rocks. Boiling does not prove long-term safety and some stones can crack.

Wood and biofilm

Wood can be more valuable to shrimp than rock. It offers shelter, biofilm surface and natural structure. The Shrimp Farm describes driftwood as providing shade, shelter, tannins and a surface for beneficial bacteria. Aquarium Co-Op notes that cholla wood and catappa leaves can grow biofilm, which shrimp graze.

Use only untreated aquarium-safe wood. Avoid painted, varnished, oiled, pressure-treated or glued wood. Avoid wood from roadsides, gardens and farmland because pesticides and pollution may not be visible. Soft rotten wood, resin-heavy conifer wood and wood with a chemical smell do not belong in a shrimp tank.

Cholla wood

Cholla wood is the dried skeleton of a cholla cactus, not tree wood. The Shrimp Farm explains that it slowly breaks down, releases tannins, grows biofilm and gives shelter through its hollow structure. That is why shrimp use it so well: babies and freshly molted shrimp can hide inside, while the outside becomes a feeding surface.

Choose pest-free, untreated cholla. Brush, rinse and soak it until it sinks. Boiling can help it waterlog faster, but cholla will soften and break down over time. Remove pieces that smell foul, rot heavily or coincide with poor water quality.

Spiderwood and driftwood

Spiderwood gives many branches and micro-hiding places. It often floats at first and can grow white biofilm in young tanks. That is usually not a disaster. Shrimp, snails and microfauna often eat it as the tank matures. It becomes a problem when the wood smells bad, water clouds up, ammonia or nitrite appears, or the tank is too young for animals.

Bogwood and other aquarium driftwood can also work well. Expect tannins. The water may turn yellow or tea-colored. That is not automatically harmful, but you can pre-soak the wood and change the soaking water if you want less staining.

Using hardscape by shrimp group

Neocaridina

Cherry shrimp, blue dream, yellow fire and other Neocaridina are usually easiest in stable tap water, inert substrate and low-surprise hardscape. Lava rock, cholla, spiderwood, bogwood and inert-tested stones often fit. Seiryu or carbonate rock only fits if the final pH, GH, KH and TDS are stable and appropriate.

Bee and Taiwan Bee Caridina

For Crystal Red, Crystal Black, Taiwan Bee, Pinto and Blue Bolt, the safer beginner route is usually active soil, RO water and GH+ without KH. Use inert-tested stone and wood. Avoid limestone, coral, shells, cuttlebone and Seiryu-style stone when low KH is the goal.

Amano, fan shrimp and Sulawesi

Amano shrimp tolerate a wider range but still need clean, stable water and shelter. Fan shrimp need flow and suspended food, so do not block circulation with hardscape. Sulawesi shrimp are different: they need warm, mineral-rich, often alkaline water and are not covered by standard soft-water Caridina advice.

If the wrong hardscape is already in the tank

Do not tear everything apart blindly while shrimp are inside. First measure pH, GH, KH, TDS, ammonia and nitrite. If KH, GH and pH are rising because of carbonate rock, remove the suspected material and do calm water changes with matched temperature and minerals. Do not chase pH down with acid products.

If deaths started after new wood, check ammonia, nitrite and smell. Remove rotting pieces, change water carefully and add aeration if shrimp look weak or oxygen-stressed. The usual answer is removing the source and stabilizing water, not adding more products.

Common mistakes

  • Using Seiryu or limestone in an active-soil Caridina tank.
  • Relying only on a vinegar test and never measuring KH, GH or pH.
  • Using wild-collected rock or wood from unknown places.
  • Cleaning wood with soap, bleach, alcohol or household vinegar.
  • Stacking heavy stones loosely on deep substrate.
  • Adding shrimp to a young tank full of new wood without testing ammonia and nitrite.
  • Treating normal white wood biofilm as disease.
  • Building hardscape so densely that food and waste cannot be reached.

Conclusion

The safest beginner hardscape is predictable hardscape. Wood such as cholla, spiderwood and aquarium driftwood gives shelter and biofilm when it is untreated and prepared well.
