The safest rule for a first shrimp tank is simple: choose the shrimp and the water source first, then choose the substrate. Inert substrate does not intentionally change pH or KH, so it is usually the easiest choice for Neocaridina in suitable tap water. Active soil lowers and buffers pH and KH, so it is mainly useful for many soft-water Caridina lines such as Crystal Red, Crystal Black, Taiwan Bee, Pinto and Blue Bolt with RO water and GH+ minerals.

The common beginner mistake is buying "shrimp soil" because the bag mentions shrimp. That can be correct for a Caridina plan, but confusing in a simple Neocaridina tank with tap water. Substrate is water chemistry, not only decoration.

What inert substrate means

Inert substrate is sand, gravel or another aquarium-safe bottom layer that does not deliberately steer water chemistry. It is surface for bacteria, biofilm, roots and debris, but it is not meant to bind KH or lower pH. Tropica describes its Plant Growth Substrate as neutral for KH and pH when used under gravel, which is different from active aquarium soil.

Inert does not mean every material is safe. Avoid painted gravel of unknown quality, sharp material, polluted sand, metal contamination and calcareous material unless it fits the water plan. Use aquarium-safe sand or fine gravel and rinse dust before setup.

What active soil means

Active soil changes water chemistry. Tropica describes Aquarium Soil as an active bottom layer that lowers pH and affects water chemistry. In shrimp tanks, keepers mainly use it to keep KH low and pH acidic for sensitive Caridina lines.

That benefit has tradeoffs. Active soil works against KH-rich water, eventually exhausts and some soils can release ammonia or ammonium during startup. ADA notes that newly set up aquariums can contain ammonia and warns that ammonia is more toxic above pH 7. The Shrimp Farm therefore recommends cycling Aquasoil Amazonia until ammonia and nitrite are zero before animals are added.

Why KH is the key

KH is the hobby test that roughly represents carbonate buffering. SRAC explains alkalinity as water's ability to absorb acid and buffer pH change, with carbonates and bicarbonates as major components. Moderate to high alkalinity usually keeps pH more neutral or slightly basic and less variable.

Active soil creates a different balance: low KH and lower pH. If you keep adding KH-rich tap water, the soil and water changes fight each other. The soil pulls KH down, the water change raises it again and pH follows. Shrimp usually handle stable numbers better than repeated swings.

Neocaridina and inert substrate

The Shrimp Farm describes Neocaridina as adaptable and gives ideal ranges around pH 7.0-7.6, GH 9-11 and KH 4-6. In its wider pet shrimp guide, it gives Neocaridina pH 7.0-7.6, GH 8-14 and KH 4-7. Many tap waters can be close enough, but testing is still required.

With inert substrate, you see what your water really does. The bottom layer is not pulling away KH and you do not need to correct the substrate. For beginners that means fewer variables, easier water changes and less risk of accidentally fighting the setup.

Can Neocaridina live on active soil? Sometimes, especially if the line is adapted and GH stays stable. It is still not the default beginner route. If you use active soil and then keep adding KH because pH looks low, you are fighting the soil. Choose inert, or deliberately run a low-KH system with stable GH.

Caridina and active soil

Caridina is not one single care type. Amano, Sulawesi, tiger lines and wild forms differ. But for many Bee and Taiwan Bee lines, active soil with RO water and GH+ is the practical standard. The Shrimp Farm describes Caridina as more sensitive, with soft water, pH below 7, GH 2-5 and KH 0-2, often using RODI water, GH+ minerals and active substrate.

The point is not that these shrimp need dirt. The point is that active soil helps keep a stable low-KH environment. Without it, beginners often try acids or botanicals to chase pH, which usually gives less margin with expensive shrimp.

Tap water or RO water

Test tap water before buying substrate: pH, GH, KH and TDS. Ask the breeder for their values and substrate. If your tap water is pH 7.4, GH 8 and KH 5, a Neocaridina tank on inert substrate is logical. If you want Crystal Red and your tap water has KH 6, active soil with that same tap water is not a clean plan. RO water with GH+ is usually more predictable.

RO water is not ready shrimp water by itself. It needs remineralizing. Neocaridina on RO often use GH/KH+. Bee-type Caridina usually use GH+ without KH so the active soil does not have to fight incoming carbonate hardness.

Plants and nutrient substrates

Plant nutrition must not come at the cost of shrimp safety. LICG warns that plant nutrient substrates can contain metals toxic to shrimp and can rot. Do not use a random rich plant base in a shrimp tank just because plants like it.

Inert substrate can still grow mosses, epiphytes such as Anubias and Bucephalandra, Java fern, floaters and easy stems. Use shrimp-safe root tabs carefully if needed. Stability and clean water come before heavy plant fertilization.

Grain size, depth and maintenance

Fine gravel or coarse sand is easiest for many beginner tanks. Very fine deep sand can compact. Very coarse gravel traps food and waste where shrimp cannot graze easily. A practical grain size is often around 1 to 3 mm, with a simple layer around 2 to 4 cm.

Dark substrate often shows shrimp colors well and can make the tank feel calmer. That is a practical choice, not a magic health requirement.

Starting active soil safely

Do not use active soil as an excuse to add shrimp early. Tropica recommends large frequent water changes during the first four weeks with Aquarium Soil. The Shrimp Farm describes an ammonia spike with Aquasoil Amazonia and recommends cycling until ammonia and nitrite are zero. Brands differ, but the rule is the same: test before animals.

Avoid limestone, crushed coral and KH-raising products in a low-pH Caridina system unless you have a specific reason. Prepare water before it enters the tank and match GH, TDS and temperature. Sudden changes are often more dangerous than a number that is slightly imperfect.
