Choosing moss and plants for a shrimp tank

Java moss, Anubias nana and Java fern are useful initial choices when their size and requirements fit your tank. They provide structure without requiring a demanding planted setup. Assess origin and possible treatment as well as species: an undemanding plant is not automatically a safely supplied product.

A small planting plan

• Java moss, Taxiphyllum barbieri: attach a manageable portion to wood or rock. Dennerle describes growth under low-to-medium light without mandatory CO2 injection. Keep it accessible to check debris and overgrowth.
• Anubias nana: attach to wood or rock, leaving its rhizome out of the substrate. Tropica describes slow growth and suitability for shade.
• Java fern, Microsorum pteropus: also attach to wood or rock with the rhizome exposed. Allow for the mature size of the selected form.
• An additional stem or floating plant: choose from available space, temperature, lighting and that plant’s requirements. Keep access to the surface and filter.

Established plant surfaces can provide additional foraging space for grazing Neocaridina. A newly planted tank does not yet demonstrate a complete food supply. Moss does not guarantee juvenile survival among fish either. For warm-water Cardinal or a fan shrimp, the animal determines the system first; a generic plant list cannot replace that decision.

Origin before soaking time

Ask about pesticide treatment and the product form you are buying. Tropica describes its own 1-2-Grow tissue culture as free of pesticides, snails and algae, but does not guarantee this for every bundled plant. This distinction is a reason to choose a better-documented supplier or product form when origin is unclear.

Remove packaging and rinse away gel or loose rock wool carefully according to instructions. Keeping plants separately allows observation, but a fixed soaking or waiting period does not prove an unknown pesticide is gone. Do not introduce material with uncertain treatment directly into an existing colony. An improvised disinfectant mixture cannot certify unknown plants as safe.

Maintain without changing everything at once

Keep moss and plants arranged so filtration, food and debris remain visible. Check for shrimp and young before trimming or removing plants. Remove loose clippings and clearly dying material. Avoid stripping the whole tank at once; retain useful refuge and grazing space. Never discard plants or clippings into outdoor waters.

Choose photoperiod and nutrition from the plants, equipment and observed growth. One number of lighting hours does not fit every tank. CO2 injection is not required for the simple setup described here. Plants need nutrients, but a brand name or the word “natural” does not establish shrimp safety. Follow the actual aquarium product and actual water volume; avoid stacking products or overdosing. Copper medication and trace nutrients in fertiliser are not automatically equivalent exposures.

Prefer adding the initial plants during startup and monitor breakdown and water measurements. Plants do not replace working filtration. Use the substrate comparison and plan an accessible layout.

Neocaridina and bee shrimp do not require two fixed plant lists

For Neocaridina davidi, use measured water conditions, available lighting and growth space as selection criteria. For bee/Taiwan bee, choose plants fitting the selected, commonly soft and low-alkalinity husbandry system. Do not make water unsuitable for the animals to preserve one plant. Active soil is not required for moss or a rhizome plant attached to wood.

Caridina also includes Amano, tiger and Cardinal shrimp, among others. “Plants for Caridina” therefore does not sufficiently define water or temperature. Check the actual species in the species comparison. For placement and trimming use the moss article or rhizome plants.
