Why ammonia risk changes with pH and temperature
Most hobby tests read total ammonia, meaning ammonia plus ammonium. UF/IFAS explains that the more toxic un-ionized form, NH3, increases as pH and temperature rise. The same total ammonia reading is therefore more dangerous in warm or alkaline water than in cooler acidic water.

- Record the trend. Test after a few hours and then daily. Resume feeding only after ammonia and nitrite stay at zero.
How much water should you change?
There is no universal percentage. If shrimp still behave normally and the reading is low, start with about 20 to 30 percent matched water and retest. If shrimp are collapsing, crowding the filter output or dying, faster dilution is justified, but the new water still needs to be treated and matched.
NMSU recommends dilution and water exchange when ammonia or nitrite rises in startup systems, with dechlorinated replacement water at matching temperature and pH. For shrimp, also match GH, KH and TDS as closely as possible to avoid adding osmotic stress during the rescue.

- Do not feed to give energy. Food increases waste.
- Do not replace or deep-clean the whole filter.
- Do not stir the substrate unless you are removing a specific rotten pocket.
