A shrimp aquarium also needs more than nitrogen-processing capacity. Shrimp spend much of the day grazing on biofilm, algae film and other microorganisms. Pure cycling ammonia is easier to measure than decomposing food. If you use a bottled product, follow its aquarium instructions and avoid products with fragrance, soap or unknown additives. If you use food, remember that it must decay before ammonia appears, so the readings are less predictable.

- Build the final system. Install the filter, substrate and hardscape first. Dechlorinate the water and start normal circulation.
- Record the baseline. Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH before adding the waste source. Tap water and active soil can affect the starting values.
- Add a controlled source. Create a clearly measurable load using the product directions. Do not keep adding more simply because a reading is not changing quickly.
- Test the curve. Early on, ammonia is normally the main signal. Nitrite may then rise while ammonia falls. Later, both should return to zero as processing capacity develops.
- Confirm, do not assume. Once both reach zero, add the same controlled test load again. The system should process it without a lingering ammonia or nitrite reading.
- Reset stocking conditions. If nitrate or dissolved waste is high, make a matched water change. Recheck temperature, pH, GH, KH and TDS for the shrimp you plan to keep.
- Let grazing surfaces mature. Keep the aquarium lit and stable long enough for visible biofilm and plant growth, without turning the tank into an overfed waste container.

Active soil changes the interpretation
Some active soils release ammonia at the start and can lower pH and KH. That does not mean they are defective, but it means you must follow the substrate instructions and measure rather than copy a schedule from an inert-substrate tank. Should you change water during cycling?
A water change does not remove the established bacteria from the filter; most live on surfaces. A matched water change is useful when ammonia or nitrite is far beyond the useful test range, nitrate becomes excessive, the substrate instructions call for it or pH has moved into a range that stalls the process. Avoid random large changes that make the test log impossible to interpret.

- Following a fixed day count. Two aquariums started together can develop at different speeds.

- Cleaning or replacing all filter media. This removes the surfaces you are trying to mature.
