Keeping Cardinal shrimp: choose the species and water system first

Cardinal shrimp, Caridina dennerli, need an established, biologically functioning aquarium with suitable warm water, usable grazing surfaces and accountable feeding. Buy them after you can maintain that system. An existing soft-water bee-shrimp tank is not automatically suitable simply because both belong to Caridina.
Check what you are buying
The original description places C. dennerli in Lake Matano on Sulawesi, living on and between rocks. Its dark red to purple body carries white spots and conspicuously white front feeding claws. Ask for the scientific name, the stock’s origin, current water readings and feeding routine. A trade name or photograph alone does not establish identity and history.
Ask whether the animals are captive bred and how long they have lived under the stated conditions. Our preference for a documented, established breeding group is a practical choice for traceability and preparation; captive breeding does not guarantee health.
Prepare water and living space
- Record the intended temperature and water composition using species-specific husbandry information and the conditions of the offered stock. A lake measurement is not an independent aquarium recipe.
- Choose a repeatable preparation method. Compare Sulawesi minerals and their use before buying; high pH alone says too little about composition.
- Provide stable hard surfaces with accessible grazing places and refuges. Leave room to inspect animals, waste and filtration.
- Assess filter function and the course of water readings before stocking. Visible surface growth or one zero reading does not demonstrate that a new aquarium can process the load.
Avoid common setup mistakes
Heating an empty aquarium and immediately adding animals skips preparation. Extra powder does not mature a young tank. Conversely, feeding as little as possible is not the objective: assess whether food reaches grazing places and is taken up. Use the Cardinal feeding approach.
Do not unknowingly change minerals, substrate or the water recipe. Prepare replacement water outside the aquarium and compare it with the tank. Required water changes depend on loading and circumstances; a fixed small change must not justify inadequate action during pollution.
Warm water requires attention to gas exchange. At the same total ammonia concentration, the proportion of more toxic NH3 increases with pH and temperature. During sudden deterioration, check water, temperature, filtration and recent additions immediately. Do not wait a week for a pattern: follow the problem approach.
