Feeding Amano shrimp and assessing food competition

Treat an adult Amano shrimp, Caridina multidentata, as an animal with nutritional requirements rather than a cleaning device. Grazing algae and other material shows behaviour but does not establish that the supply covers its whole diet. Plan additional food from available resources and observations.

The Shrimp Farm reports that Amano shrimp can carry food away and compete with smaller shrimp or fish. Look beyond the feeding spot. A disappearing pellet may be carried by one animal while others received nothing.

  • Confirm the species and life stage first; this approach concerns adults in freshwater.
  • Read the food’s intended use and offer a controllable portion at accessible places. Account for fish food already entering the aquarium.
  • Follow who carries food away and where it goes. If needed, divide the same assessed portion without automatically filling every additional location.
  • Check access for smaller shrimp too. Do not blindly add more to solve competition.

Do not deliberately provide inadequate nutrition to force Amano shrimp to eat more algae. Algae management needs its own assessment of plant growth, lighting and maintenance. Amano shrimp do not replace filtration or water management. For mixed aquariums use the food-distribution checks.

Sources and scope

The species source is husbandry information from a seller with its own animals, not a feeding trial. Food and water sources support labelling and loading considerations. We predict neither algae-removal quantities nor an exact ration.
