Give each group a stable code and record changes when they occur. Separate observation from explanation: “three juveniles seen” is an observation; “the others are starving” is an explanation requiring investigation. A simple notebook or file is sufficient.
Stable information for each group
- Group code, tank and start date.
- Species or trade name, supplier, known parent group and uncertainties about origin.
- Starting numbers and known sexes; label estimates as estimates.
- Water source, mineral product, substrate, filtration and foods.
- Breeding aim and defined selection criteria, if selecting.
At each relevant observation
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Date and group | Time and stable group code. |
| Observation | Eggs, visible juveniles by size class, behaviour, molts or losses. |
| Measurement | Value, unit, method and whether tank or replacement water was tested. |
| Change | Food, water change, maintenance, addition or transfer. |
| Selection | Number assessed, criterion, outcome and destination of moved animals. |
| Uncertainty | Incomplete count, unknown parent or several possible explanations. |
| Follow-up | What to check and when; respond immediately to acute losses. |
Attach dates and group codes to photographs and keep lighting comparable. Every transfer needs source, destination, number and known origin. Use blank fields or “not measured” rather than entering a usual value as though it were measured.
Review without overinterpreting
Compare the same group and similar ages. More visible juveniles after a food change may also reflect a new hatch or greater visibility. List possible explanations and, for nonurgent questions, preferably change one relevant factor at a time. Unsafe conditions require protecting animals before preserving a tidy comparison.
Use the records for juvenile survival, colour selection and discussions of persistent problems. Never invent missing origin records retrospectively.
Sources and scope
This template is an editorial tool. General care and the importance of known reproductive contributions provide context; completing it does not produce a diagnosis, pedigree or controlled experiment.
