Breeding Sulawesi shrimp: start with the species, using Cardinal as an example

“Sulawesi shrimp” does not identify one species with one breeding recipe. Establish which animals you have first. For Cardinal, Caridina dennerli from Lake Matano, hobby keepers report offspring growing in freshwater. This is not an Amano project requiring separate saline larval rearing.
Make a Cardinal project manageable
- Start with traceable origin and ask about captive breeding. A familiar trade name alone does not establish species or strain.
- Prepare a suitable warm-water system and repeatable mineral preparation before buying. Follow the Cardinal profile for attributed husbandry examples and limitations.
- Provide useful grazing surfaces, shelters and food reaching those places. A mature-looking tank does not prove every juvenile gets enough.
- Protect intakes and inspect maintenance water and removed material for juveniles.
- Follow whether several size classes continue to appear and grow, as well as egg carrying. Label incomplete counts as estimates.
Warm water and organic loading make gas exchange important. Underfeeding to avoid waste is not an established breeding plan; uncontrolled powder additions are not either. Assess uptake, leftovers, filtration and measurements together. During acute losses, the environment takes priority over colour or yield targets.
Keep origin and observations together
Record species, claimed origin, water preparation, temperature, food and observed offspring. This supports comparison with the source keeper. A lake measurement is not a guaranteed safe aquarium limit, and one successful aquarium does not establish a universal optimum.
C. spinata and C. woltereckae have separate species profiles. Do not blindly copy a Cardinal schedule for them. For each project, prefer traceable captive-bred animals over unclear origin; Sulawesi Keepers’ field reports describe pressures on natural populations.

The original description supports species identity and origin. Garnelenhaus and Gabor Horvath describe their own husbandry; Sulawesi Keepers reports fieldwork. These are different types of evidence. We give no experimentally established breeding optimum or success rate.
