Keeping Crystal Red: a manageable soft-water system

Crystal Red and Red Bee are names used for red-patterned bee shrimp. The natural bee species Caridina logemanni was described from Hong Kong. This gives context but does not establish the ancestry of every offered strain. The key care preparation is a suitable soft-water system that you can reproduce during water changes.
Start with measurements, not a shopping list
Before purchase, ask about GH, KH, pH, temperature, source water and substrate at the supplier. Compare these with your own water and bee husbandry guidance. Do not blindly copy a current supplier reading if it appears unsuitable. A single TDS value does not identify calcium, magnesium or buffering.
- If source water already suits the chosen setup, RO is not automatically compulsory.
- If tap water is too hard or strongly buffered, RO water with an appropriate mineral product may offer a more repeatable starting point.
- A GH+ product raises hardness without necessarily adding much KH. Check the actual product’s composition and dose.
- Active substrate can affect pH and KH. It is a system component, not a disinfectant or substitute for established biological filtration.
The cited Bee Shrimp Mineral GH+ and Tropica Aquarium Soil products each have their own instructions. Do not combine arbitrary scoops, acid drops and substrate hoping for a suitable final reading. Prepare replacement water outside the aquarium and check what actually changes. The water-choice guide develops this route.
Check the combination before adding animals
Follow readings in the assembled aquarium, including filter performance and any ammonium released by the substrate. Calcareous material can work against an intentionally low-KH setup. Provide grazing surfaces, food, protected filter intakes and a maintenance plan. Clear water or a set number of elapsed weeks alone does not establish readiness.
If pH changes later, investigate source water, substrate, KH and CO2 before correcting it. Do not leave unsuitable conditions unchanged in the name of stability. With deaths or obvious respiratory distress, follow the problem approach promptly rather than waiting through a long optimisation experiment.
