Which shrimp fits your water and maintenance routine?

The best choice is a shrimp for which you can establish suitable conditions and keep reproducing them. Test source water and any existing aquarium. Start with GH, KH, pH and temperature, then assess filter maturity, space and feeding strategy. “I have tap water” or one TDS value is insufficient.

Choose a route you can maintain

• Suitable tap water and a first visible freshwater colony: investigate Neocaridina davidi. Check actual composition; colour forms do not each supply a different water recipe.
• Intentional soft-water management: compare bee or Taiwan Bee if you can prepare water and understand interaction with substrate. RO and GH+ may help but are not goals in themselves.
• A dedicated warm-water system: investigate Cardinal, Caridina dennerli, only if temperature, minerals, oxygen provision and maintenance can be managed together. Do not copy this to every shrimp from Sulawesi.
• Adult grazers without simple freshwater offspring: compare Amano. Larval development is a different task from adult care.
• An aquarium with accessible current and fine food: investigate bamboo or vampire shrimp. A calm nano tank does not become suitable merely because pH matches on paper.

Difficulty lies in additional tasks

Replace an “expert” label with concrete questions: can I prepare replacement water, manage heat, deliver food to every shrimp and measure changes? If not yet, improve the setup first or choose a better-fitting species. An expensive Boa is not difficult simply because of price; inexpensive does not mean care-free.

Plan a week of measurements, feeding and necessary maintenance, plus arrangements for absence. If you can only occasionally prepare the required water, the species may not suit your current routine. Try the routine in a prepared aquarium before purchase.
