Keeping bamboo shrimp: build an accessible feeding station

Bamboo shrimp, usually offered as Atyopsis moluccensis, catch fine food particles with their fans. A usable place in the current is therefore as important as suitable water. A heavily planted, nearly still aquarium does not automatically provide the right feeding route.
Build around a place where the shrimp can remain seated
Position secure wood or rock so the animal has a foothold in moving water. Also provide sheltered resting places outside the strongest flow. Keep décor stable and the filter intake protected. The shrimp must be able to move between locations.
Practical Fishkeeping describes this combination of current, perches and shelter for Atyopsis. A pump’s advertised output does not establish what happens at the fans: furnishings and outlet direction affect where particles travel.
Follow a small portion of food
- Choose suitable fine food and mix a small amount with aquarium water.
- Release it gently upstream of the perch without directing a forceful jet at the animal.
- Observe whether particles pass the fans or disappear straight into the filter. Adjust feeding position or outlet direction if needed.
- Afterwards, check accumulation and water quality. Do not cloud the entire aquarium to compensate for one poor feeding route.
Repeated substrate sweeping is a reason to investigate food availability and current. It does not establish deficiency by itself. Conversely, opening the fans does not prove adequate useful food intake. Also follow condition, feeding and water readings over time.
An established aquarium does not replace feeding
An established system helps biological stability but may contain little suitable suspended food. Do not deliberately accumulate filter waste or leave filtration off for long periods. Oxygen and food provision must work together. See the feeding guide for the distinction between filtering and grazing.

The husbandry sources describe Atyopsis filter feeding. Oxygen mechanisms come from aquaculture guidance without transferring fish thresholds. The observation check is our practical application, not a test that proves nutritional adequacy.
