A 20-litre shrimp aquarium: understand its limitations

An established 20-litre tank can be workable for a small Neocaridina-only setup when water, filtration and maintenance are appropriate. When choosing a first shrimp tank, prefer at least 30 litres as LICG advises. An existing 20-litre aquarium needs assessment of actual water volume, maturity, temperature and maintenance. The number on its packaging does not determine a safe stocking level.

Nominal capacity is not actual water volume

Substrate, rocks and the space above the waterline take up volume. Record how much water the furnished tank actually holds so preparation and any product dosing use the correct volume. The same amount of a dissolved substance reaches a higher concentration in less water. Temperature changes and evaporation also depend on shape, cover, equipment and surroundings.

Assess an existing small tank

• Choose the exact species before furnishing. A compact Neocaridina-only tank is a different project from larger fan shrimp or an Amano group.
• Check that the filter processes the actual load and that established grazing surfaces are accessible. Clear water or one zero reading is insufficient.
• Measure temperature changes at the location and avoid direct sun.
• Protect filter intakes and make leftovers visible and removable.
• Plan suitable housing for a growing colony and observation during absences.

No universal number per litre

A practical group recommendation is not measured maximum carrying capacity. Decide on a starter group only after assessing the tank; use the starter-group advice for that separate decision. Do not add fish based solely on their current small size. If suitable housing is uncertain, choose more space or postpone purchase.

More water does not make an immature filter, unsuitable water recipe or excess food safe. In a small aquarium too, choose water changes from the situation; a fixed small percentage does not solve an emergency. Use the measurable maintenance routine and the location checks.

LICG recommends a preference for at least 30 litres. This is husbandry advice, not an experimentally established threshold. Judging a smaller tank also requires species, actual water volume, layout and maintenance.
