Choosing a suitable location for a shrimp aquarium

Choose a location away from direct sunlight, with appropriate support for the filled aquarium and enough maintenance space. Then measure the actual water temperature there. Furniture that looks suitable or a comfortable room temperature does not establish appropriate conditions for your shrimp.

Check before filling

• Confirm permitted weight and support with the tank and stand manufacturers. Water weighs approximately one kilogram per litre; include glass, substrate, stones and other furnishings.
• Keep the tank stable and level as specified. Support and any cushioning mat depend on the construction. Do not move a filled tank to try another location.
• Leave room to remove filter parts, open the lid and work with a bucket and hose.
• Keep electrical connections away from splashes, use prescribed drip loops and retain access to equipment.
• Avoid locations where doors, furniture or passers-by can strike the tank or cables.

Measure across time and seasons

Avoid direct sun, radiators and warm air outlets. An exterior wall, cold window or air conditioner may also create unwanted changes. Check different times of day during cycling. A small container of water or a few mild days provides only an initial impression, not a prediction of summer heat in the full aquarium.

A heater warms water but does not solve overheating. Decide whether heating or cooling is needed for the chosen species. Neocaridina, bee/Taiwan Bee and Sulawesi Cardinal do not share one temperature target. Use the water guide and measure with a thermometer.

Water level and access

Evaporation leaves minerals behind. Track water level and keep filters and any heater within their operating limits. Plan top-ups separately from normal water changes. Keep cleaning products and sprays away from the open tank. Choose somewhere you can inspect animals and equipment daily without disturbing the layout.
