Suitable for: Beginners who want a robust Caridina rather than a color show line. Watch especially: adjust KH, GH and TDS slowly.

Important

Do not call Malawa simply "Sulawesi shrimp" without context. It is not cared for like the sensitive ancient-lake species.

Care in practice

These are the points that most often make the difference between survival and a stable colony.

Water parameters and stability

Safe practical range: 20-28 degrees Celsius, pH 6.8-8.2, GH 4-18, KH 1-12 and TDS around 120-350 ppm.

Aquarium setup

Use at least 30 liters with grazing surfaces, moss, wood, leaves, stones and a safe filter.

Feeding

They are useful grazers and cleaners, but overfeeding can quickly increase population and waste load.

Group size and behavior

Peaceful and active in groups. Watch population growth in small tanks.

Combining with fish or shrimp

Calm snails and small fish can work; young shrimp are still prey. They do not interbreed with Neocaridina.

Breeding and juveniles

Females release miniature shrimp in freshwater. Mature biofilm-rich tanks can produce rapid colony growth.

Common mistakes

Common mistakes are confusing it with sensitive lake Sulawesi shrimp, underestimating population growth, overfeeding and judging it like a show color line.

Deep dive

Background and identification

Extra context helps you identify, compare and keep the species safely.

Origin and natural habitat

This shrimp comes from Sulawesi river systems, not the same specialist ancient lakes as many famous Sulawesi shrimp.

Appearance and identification

Usually transparent to brown, grey or lightly striped; valued more for behavior and hardiness than bright color.

Similar species and color lines

Much easier than Sulawesi Cardinal and often as approachable as a hardy Neocaridina setup.

Full species profile

Malawa shrimp (Caridina pareparensis parvidentata) show that Sulawesi shrimp are not always extremely difficult. This river Caridina is much more tolerant than lake species such as Cardinal shrimp.
