Babaulti shrimp

Caridina profile

Babaulti shrimp

Caridina cf. babaulti

Caridina
Intermediate
Freshwater direct development, often slower than Neocaridina

Babaulti shrimp are a useful middle step: usually less demanding than Crystal Red, but less standardized than Neocaridina. Use Caridina cf. babaulti because trade animals are not always exactly identified.

Important

Do not expect color-stable Neocaridina behavior. Babaulti can be shy, change color and vary strongly by source.

Care in practice

These are the points that most often make the difference between survival and a stable colony.

Water parameters and stability

Safe range: 20-26 degrees Celsius, pH 6.5-7.8, GH 4-12, KH 1-8 and TDS around 120-280 ppm.

Aquarium setup

Use at least 30 liters with moss, plants, wood, leaves and calm areas rich in biofilm.

Feeding

Feed small plant-focused portions and let natural grazing do most of the work.

Group size and behavior

Peaceful group shrimp, often more visible in a calm species tank than in busy community tanks.

Combining with fish or shrimp

Snails and calm fish can work, but young shrimp are safer in a species tank.

Breeding and juveniles

Breeds in freshwater with miniature shrimp, though pace and survival depend on line and tank maturity.

Common mistakes

Common mistakes are treating all Babaulti lines as identical, seeing color change as disease, adding busy fish and overfeeding shy animals.

Background and identification

Extra context helps you identify, compare and keep the species safely.

Origin and natural habitat

Caridina cf. babaulti refers to a South and Southeast Asian species complex with trade uncertainty.

Appearance and identification

Colors range from green and olive to brown, yellowish or striped, and may shift with stress and background.

Similar species and color lines

Less straightforward than Neocaridina, usually less soft-water-specialist than Crystal Red.

Full species profile

Babaulti shrimp (Caridina cf. babaulti) sit between hardy Neocaridina and more specialized Bee-Caridina. Trade lines include green, brown, yellow and zebra-like forms.
