Many beginners become obsessed with one perfect pH number. In practice, shrimp care more about stability. A shrimp living at a stable pH of 7.5 is usually safer than one living in water that swings between 6.5 and 7.0 every day. The key parameter behind pH stability is KH, or carbonate hardness.

What is KH?

KH measures carbonates and bicarbonates in the water. These substances neutralize acids and act as a buffer for pH. In every aquarium, acids are produced by biological processes such as waste breakdown, nitrification and CO2. Without buffering, pH can drop quickly.

A higher KH creates a stronger pH buffer. A KH of zero means the water has almost no carbonate buffer and pH can move quickly.

The relationship between pH, KH and CO2

These three values are connected. KH resists pH change. CO2 lowers pH by forming carbonic acid in water. The more KH you have, the more acid is needed to move pH downward. This is why high-KH tap water often holds a stable, higher pH.

The ideal KH depends on the shrimp

Neocaridina shrimp

Neocaridina usually do well with some KH. A range around 2-6 dKH is often practical and helps keep pH stable around 7.0-7.8. Many tap-water tanks work because the tap water already contains enough KH.

Caridina Bee, Crystal and Taiwan Bee shrimp

These shrimp are usually kept with very low KH, often 0-1. That sounds unstable, but active substrate takes over the buffering role. The substrate lowers and stabilizes pH in the acidic range. This is why soft-water Caridina tanks use RO water plus GH+ minerals, not GH/KH+.

How to keep pH stable in a Neocaridina tank

  • Test your tap water KH.
  • If KH is too low, raise it gradually with crushed coral or prepared GH/KH+ water.
  • Use inert substrate that does not unexpectedly alter pH.
  • Do regular small water changes to replenish minerals and maintain water quality.

Use a simple log. Date, values, water change size, food and behavior are enough. After two or three weeks, trends tell more than a single reading: creeping TDS points to accumulation, falling KH points to buffer loss, repeated trouble after water changes points to preparation mismatch.

Concrete route for the next seven days

Use day one for measurement only. Test the tank, test the new water, check the thermometer, look at the filter flow and watch the shrimp for at least one normal feeding moment. On day two, make one low-risk change: prepare better matched water, increase surface movement, remove a suspected carbonate or metal source, reduce feeding, or split the planned water change into smaller portions.

Days three to seven are for observation. Do not add a second correction just because the number is not perfect yet. Look for active grazing, normal molting, berried females, shrimplets, hiding, frantic swimming and deaths. If behavior improves while values move slowly, keep the route. If behavior worsens or ammonia, nitrite, heat or toxins appear, switch from fine tuning to stabilization.

When the colony is healthy, let the next regular water change carry the correction. That is slower, but it protects biofilm, filter bacteria and osmotic balance. This is especially important in small aquariums, new tanks, soft-water Caridina setups and Sulawesi tanks where one rushed correction can move several parameters at once.

Neocaridina: wider tolerance, but stability, GH and oxygen still matter. Tap water can work when tested and consistent. Caridina: less margin, often low KH, active soil and RO water with GH+. Avoid fast pH, GH and TDS swings. Sulawesi: warm alkaline systems with high oxygen and low organic load; do not copy soft-water advice. Fan shrimp: need mature tanks, flow and fine suspended food; water corrections must not destroy biofilm or filter stability.
