Shrimp tank maintenance: plan from observations

Schedule regular checks, but choose the intervention from the state of the aquarium. Daily observation helps detect change. A weekly maintenance slot can be useful without requiring weekly cleaning of a functioning filter.
An adaptable schedule
- During daily care: observe behaviour, food intake, temperature, water level and filtration. Remove dead animals and clearly decaying leftovers.
- At a recurring time, for example weekly: compare water readings and feeding, inspect coatings, plant growth and deposits. Choose water replacement from the trend.
- When circulation declines: investigate blockage and clean affected parts according to the equipment instructions.
- When plants obstruct access, light or flow: trim selectively and collect fragments. Remove dying material when needed.
- After intervention: recheck equipment and animals, and measure ammonia/nitrite after relevant disturbance.
Record date, readings, actual replacement volume and products used. A task needed progressively sooner may indicate increasing load or awkward layout. Do not blindly reduce food; investigate intake, leftovers and food access too.
Differences between systems
Bee/Taiwan bee and Cardinal systems need repeatable water preparation; a calendar cannot make unsuitable water appropriate. For fan shrimp, usable feeding current must recover after maintenance. Densely planted Neocaridina tanks still need functioning filtration and measurements.
Use the water-change routine, filter check and siphoning procedure for specific tasks. Emergencies override the calendar: do not wait for maintenance day.
