Whether you keep Neocaridina or sensitive Caridina, pH is one of the core values to understand. But how do you measure it reliably? Most shrimp keepers choose between a classic drop test and a digital pH meter.

The classic drop test

A drop test uses aquarium water, reagent drops and a color chart. It is simple, cheap and good enough for many general checks.

Advantages

  • Affordable and widely available.
  • No calibration required.
  • Good enough for a broad indication, especially in stable Neocaridina tanks.

Disadvantages

  • Colors can be hard to read, especially in the lower pH range.
  • Precision is limited, often in steps of 0.2 or 0.5 pH.
  • Old reagents can give unreliable results.
  • Room light and aquarium light can change how the color looks.

The digital pH meter

A digital meter uses a glass electrode and gives a numerical reading. It is fast and precise, but only when maintained correctly.

Advantages

  • Clear reading without color guessing.
  • More precision for soft-water Caridina setups.
  • Consistent when properly calibrated.

Disadvantages

  • A reliable meter costs more than a drop test.
  • It must be calibrated regularly.
  • The electrode is fragile and must stay moist in proper storage solution.
  • Very cheap pen meters often drift or fail quickly.

Calibration and maintenance

A pH meter is only as trustworthy as its calibration. Use proper buffer solutions, usually pH 7.00 and pH 4.01 for shrimp tanks. Rinse the electrode with distilled or RO water, gently blot it, calibrate according to the manual and store it in KCL storage solution.

Never store a pH electrode dry, in tap water or in RO water. Dry or improperly stored electrodes become unreliable or unusable.

Which one should you choose?

Choose a drop test if you keep stable Neocaridina in tap water, need a broad indication and want a low-cost option.

Choose a digital meter if you keep sensitive Caridina, use active substrate and RO water, or need to detect smaller pH differences.

For serious shrimp keeping, using both is ideal: a digital meter for regular checks and a drop test as a sanity check when a reading seems strange.

Diagnosis and decision route

  1. Write down tank age, shrimp group, substrate, filter, source water and last water change.
  2. Measure temperature, pH, GH, KH, TDS, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate before changing anything.
  3. Measure the new water separately; many problems start before the water enters the aquarium.
  4. Look for a trigger in the last seven days: new animals, plants, food, fertilizer, medicine, stones, wood, cleaning or a heat wave.
  5. Choose one correction only. Use prepared water, increase oxygen, reduce feeding or remove the suspected source.
  6. Wait long enough to see behavior change unless ammonia, nitrite, heat or toxins make the situation acute.

Use a simple log. Date, values, water change size, food and behavior are enough. After two or three weeks, trends tell more than a single reading: creeping TDS points to accumulation, falling KH points to buffer loss, repeated trouble after water changes points to preparation mismatch.

Concrete route for the next seven days

Use day one for measurement only. Test the tank, test the new water, check the thermometer, look at the filter flow and watch the shrimp for at least one normal feeding moment. On day two, make one low-risk change: prepare better matched water, increase surface movement, remove a suspected carbonate or metal source, reduce feeding, or split the planned water change into smaller portions.

Days three to seven are for observation. Do not add a second correction just because the number is not perfect yet. Look for active grazing, normal molting, berried females, shrimplets, hiding, frantic swimming and deaths. If behavior improves while values move slowly, keep the route. If behavior worsens or ammonia, nitrite, heat or toxins appear, switch from fine tuning to stabilization.

When the colony is healthy, let the next regular water change carry the correction. That is slower, but it protects biofilm, filter bacteria and osmotic balance. This is especially important in small aquariums, new tanks, soft-water Caridina setups and Sulawesi tanks where one rushed correction can move several parameters at once.

Nuance by shrimp group

Neocaridina: wider tolerance, but stability, GH and oxygen still matter. Tap water can work when tested and consistent. Caridina: less margin, often low KH, active soil and RO water with GH+. Avoid fast pH, GH and TDS swings. Sulawesi: warm alkaline systems with high oxygen and low organic load; do not copy soft-water advice. Fan shrimp: need mature tanks, flow and fine suspended food; water corrections must not destroy biofilm or filter stability.

Common mistakes

  • Correcting a number without checking whether shrimp are actually stressed.
  • Dosing powders or acids directly into the aquarium instead of preparing water outside the tank.
  • Using TDS as a replacement for GH, KH, pH and nitrogen tests.
  • Changing several variables on the same day, then not knowing what helped or harmed.
  • Copying values from another shrimp group without checking substrate, source water and temperature.
