Isolate a sick shrimp or keep it in the main tank?

Do not automatically move an abnormal shrimp into a separate jar. First identify the purpose: closer observation, limiting contact or carrying out a targeted treatment. Housing must provide suitable water, gas exchange and manageable waste loading. If the main tank has a water problem, its remaining animals still need attention.

Choose the location for the actual problem

• Several animals react together after maintenance or an addition: assess and correct shared water and equipment. Catching one animal does not resolve the others’ exposure. Dangerous water may require temporary transfer to demonstrably more suitable water; do not delay solely because ideal housing is unavailable.
• One animal has persistent unexplained growth or deterioration: separation can support observation and limiting contact if capture and housing are appropriate. A visible abnormality alone does not prove contagion.
• A targeted treatment has been agreed: establish with the practitioner whether the individual, group or system needs treatment. Difficulty catching shrimp does not justify dosing the whole tank.

Prepare before capture

Use a clean aquarium-suitable container, protected filter intake, refuge and water appropriate for the animals. Compare temperature and composition with current conditions, but do not copy contaminated water merely to match measurements. Identical TDS does not establish identical composition.

An established filter can help process waste. Do not later return material from an affected aquarium to a healthy colony. Emergency housing without demonstrated filtration capacity requires active management of waste and repeated testing; an air stone alone does not cycle it. Feeding must suit the species: fan shrimp also need access to suspended food particles in a suitable current.

What an in-tank box can and cannot do

A flow-through or breeding box can improve visibility or physically separate a shrimp from fish. Because water is shared, it is not an independent system for infection control or medication. Give the chosen housing a specific purpose and use dedicated equipment when trying to limit transfer.

Follow both tanks

Capture calmly without prolonged chasing. Record behaviour and visible changes before moving, then record holding conditions and any intervention. Watch the original group for new cases too. Isolation does not justify salt or medication without appropriate support. Seek help for continuing losses or unexplained abnormalities with photographs, a timeline and measurements. For new purchases, use the separate quarantine plan.
