Bloody Mary, Sakura and Fire Red: what are you comparing?

Bloody Mary, Sakura and Fire Red are trade names used for red Neocaridina. Compare appearance and what the seller means by the name. These differences do not establish a ranking in which one red form is automatically easier to keep than another.

Two different questions behind three names

Garnelenhaus describes Bloody Mary as deep dark red with a different appearance from red Sakura. Sakura and Fire terms are also used in colour-coverage grading. Vocabulary differs between markets: “Fire” may indicate something different in another system. Ask about specific features rather than relying on another word on the label.

Inspect how much of the body and legs is coloured, where transparent areas remain and how animals appear under ordinary lighting. The darkest animal in a product photograph may not represent the group. A colour grade assesses appearance, not filter maturity, health or transport quality.

Questions that make offers comparable

  • Do photographs show this batch, examples or parent animals?
  • What size and age will be supplied, and how variable is the group?
  • What exactly does Sakura, Fire or a letter grade mean to this seller?
  • Which water readings and food are currently used? Have there been recent additions or losses?
  • What colour variation appears among offspring, and is the strain kept separately?

For a first colony, a clearly described group kept in compatible conditions matters more than a prestigious colour name. This is a practical selection judgement, not evidence that inexpensive animals are better. Start with keeping Neocaridina davidi.

Two red groups are not necessarily the same line. Keep them separate if you want to follow a particular strain; mix only if you accept variation among offspring. A generic online colour chart does not establish your animals’ ancestry.

Sources and scope

Sources describe colour forms and trade vocabulary. They do not establish that one red form is healthier, easier or genetically purer. The purchase check is our editorial application.
